Danielle van der Windt

Danielle is professor of Primary Care Epidemiology at the School of Medicine, Keele University. She leads primary care research with a strong focus on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and prognosis of musculoskeletal pain and other common health conditions (e.g. mental health or cardiovascular disease). She is a board member of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research. She has investigated predictors of long-term outcome and response to treatment, and led or contributed to trials evaluating interventions for common conditions in primary care. She leads multidisciplinary teams of clinicians and methodologists, and works closely with a team of statisticians specialising in the use of electronic health records for research.
As a methodologist her main research interests are in evidence synthesis, and diagnosis and prognosis research. She contributed to the development of the PROGRESS framework for prognosis research, with the aim to support the generation of high quality (individualised) information regarding the likely future course of a health condition, to support patients and clinicians manage health problems and make informed, optimal treatment decisions. Research income as lead or co-applicant amounts to more than £30 million, she has supervised 23 PhD theses to completion, and has contributed to >280 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, including 60 systematic reviews/meta-analyses.
